»SB Gunning For Top 10 On 2011 Forbes’ ‘Hip-Hop Cash Kings’
»Posted on August 22nd, 2010 • By: • Filed In interviewnews

We just finished another edition of “RapFix Live,” and this week’s guest was hip-hop phenomenon Soulja Boy Tell’em. While we touched on everything from him working with Gucci Mane to his thoughts on Justin’s Bieber’s YouTube domination, one of the subjects I didn’t get a chance to talk to him about on-camera was being included in Forbes’ 2010 “Hip-Hop Cash Kings” list. He came in at #18, so I had to get in his ear and ask him what that felt like.

The “Pretty Boy Swag” MC was practically blushing with excitement as he explained that his ‘hood and everybody in his hometown is really proud of him. They already hold him in high regard, and this latest news only adds to that.

Soulja Boy wasn’t entirely sure how Forbes determines the final tally for an artist’s annual earnings, but seeing his name at #18 only makes him want to improve upon that number next year, he said. He’s gunning for #7, but definitely the top 10. Forbes reported that the rapper took in $7 mil, a number SB said was not exactly right, but really close.

He went on to reveal how planned to accomplish that goal, a strategy that includes releasing his album, The DeAndre Way, going on tour and then dropping his book. Soulja Boy said he plans to follow the lead of other rappers and get into acting and movies. So I asked if he’d read a script yet. Turns out he’s been reading a bunch of scripts.

Considering he’s only 20 years old, the kid seems to have a pretty impressive plan. You know he beat out a lot of heavyweights to make that Forbes list, and dude has his head on straight. That’s what I gathered from sitting with him.

And now I can’t wait for his book to come out. I’m going to read “Teenage Millionaire” as if I was a teen; get some tips and see what I can make happen…

»Posted on August 10th, 2010 • By: • Filed In interviewmedia

“I like Kobe [Bryant],” Soulja Boy said in an interview with DJ Whoo Kid. “My whole take on this is it’s 2010, I’ve done seen it all because this sh*t is going down. I ain’t really too much surprised to see anything anymore. This n*gga LeBron gotta Miami [Heat] jersey on. Like for real though, smiling harder than a motherf*cker. The only thing you can do to define that is it’s 2010. Just like when I came out with the ‘Superman,’ n*ggas were like, ‘What the f*ck is going on?,’ it’s 2007. Last year, Drake came out singing harder than a motherf*cker, n*ggas looking around like, it’s 2009. Every year, something happens so I ain’t surprised.”

»Soulja Boy Makes More Moves Proving He’s Still Youngest In Charge
»Posted on March 15th, 2010 • By: • Filed In interview

Soulja Boy is gearing to make 2010 his year with plans to conquer Hollywood like he’s already taken over music. Currently in the lab recording his third album The DeAndre Way, the young mogul is also gearing to put his C.E.O. game in full affect with the summer release of his artist J-Bar. Soulja Boy recently checked in with Hip-Hop Wired and brought his homeboy J-Bar along as he discussed his upcoming films with Nick Cannon, getting game from Snoop Dogg and the status of his partners Gucci Mane and Wacka Flocka who’ve recently had some incidents in the streets.

Hip-Hop Wired: When did you decide that you were going to be not just a rapper but a business man in this industry?

Soulja Boy: I guess when I was like 11 or 12, I wanted to jump off in the music industry and started setting my goals. I’ve always been an entrepreneur and I always had so many different creative ideas that I could flip.

Hip-Hop Wired: With J-Bbar on the come up, most rappers who put out their boys usually end up flopping. So how are y’all preventing that from being the case with J-Bar’s career?

Soulja Boy: J-Bar is a superstar within his own way, you feel me? I feel if he would’ve came out not affiliated with me or signed to any other label, I think he still would’ve been successful without my co-sign. J-Bar just got it, I wouldn’t even waste my time if he didn’t.

Hip-Hop Wired: J-Bbar, give us a little information about the album and who you got on it.

Jabar: My album is dropping in April. I’m working with some producers I worked with in high school, my home boy who did “Pronto” and “Daze” as well as a few other tracks on the album. My homeboy who’s a Canadian producer, he did “Cuddle Up” which might be my second single, and I might try to get into the studio with Polow Da Don soon. That’s who I’m working with so far.

Hip-Hop Wired: You’ve working with Soulja Boy who obviously has been in the game for a while now… what have you learned from Soulja Boy not only as a rapper but as a business man as well?

Hip-Hop Wired: Soulja Boy, can you tell us about your new album. I know you got The DeAndre Way coming out, you want to speak on that a little bit?

Soulja Boy: I’m in the studio right now finishing my album, The Deandre Way. The day that I’m trying to set a date for is July 28th. This is my third album and it’ll be my biggest album yet. It’ll be like one of the albums that’s going to change my career and how you look at me as a rapper.

Hip-Hop Wired: What can we expect from it, any different collabos, producers?

Soulja Boy: I’m going to be producing on my album. As far as collabs go, we got Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and the whole S.O.D. Money Gang. That comes with a lot of people with a lot of different talent. Polow Da Don producing and I got a song with Chris Breezy as well. I got a lot of songs with a lot of people but as far as when I come to break down my album it’ll probably be just 12 songs and it’s going to be straight hit after hit.

Hip-Hop Wired: Let’s switch gears for a minute. Have you spoken with your homeboy Gucci since he’s been incarcerated?

J-Bar: Business is business and you got to take care of it. You have the music and then you got business.
Hip-Hop Wired: Tell us about this first single you got out, elaborate on it a little bit.

J-Bar: The first single is “Daze.” I wrote this song in one day and I was in the back of the tour bus thinking about all the stuff we’ve been doing and I came out with it. They going real heavy on the radio right now and I’m getting a lot of radio support.

Soulja Boy: I spoke to him and he’s good. He on lock down, but he’s doing his bit. I know when he gets back he’s going to hit it hard again.

Hip-Hop Wired: Have you heard from Wacka Flocka since he got shot and how’s his recovery?

Soulja Boy: I’ve talked to Frenchie. Everything is good, he still got his chain, just the world is so cold.

Hip-Hop Wired: I know you know a little about being robbed. So are there any kind of precautions that you wish you would’ve done back then?

Soulja Boy: Everything basically is the same precautions that I took before that. Everything that I do today I did that night other than that I just need to be more on my P’s and Q’s out here.

Hip-Hop Wired: When we talked to you a couple months ago you were telling us that you had some television and some movie things in the works, can you elaborate on that a little bit?

Soulja Boy: I’m currently shooting a film with Nick Cannon that should be good. I’ve worked with Nick Cannon before and we filmed a movie last year that will hopefully be released before my tour. The other thing I was talking about with theTV shows was a role on the TV show “The Game.” Im aslo going to be in two more movies. One I’m starring in and one I am just in. Make sure y’all see the one I am starring in.

Hip-Hop Wired: You brought up the tour. When’s that going to start and who’s going on the road with you?

Soulja Boy: Right now the way it’s looking we still are trying to see how we going to jump it off. The tour is going to be jumping regardless of whether or not we bring someone out, and we are going to have whoever is hot at that time.

Hip-Hop Wired: Anybody in mind you want to tour with?

Soulja Boy: When I do my tour, it’s going to have to be somebody who will bring out a lot of fans. Some of the Young Money squad. Trey Songz because he can bring the R&B side and that will be the best of both worlds.

Hip-Hop Wired: What label is J-Bar’s album going to be on. I know it’s S.O.D., but will it be straight independent or be backed by a major?

Soulja Boy: It’s S.O.D. Money Gang/Universal.

Hip-Hop Wired: With the tragedy in Haiti, is there anything you doing to contribute, you doing any kind of charity?

Soulja Boy: I’m doing a charity but I have donated money personally. It’s bad times right now. I just pray it up all the time and I just think that anything can happen at any given time. You just got to stay prayed up.

Hip-Hop Wired: What happened to Arab?

Soulja Boy: Arab right now is in Chicago doing his little grind. He got this single “Jelly” that he’s out promoting and getting radio play in Chicago. He’s doing shows and just hustling. He’s really just trying to solidify himself as an artist and not be linked with Soulja Boy all the time. We S.O.D. for life though, all of us.

Hip-Hop Wired: Can we expect to hear him on your upcoming album?

Soulja Boy: He’ll be on my album along with J-Bar and the whole S.O.D. Money Gang.

Hip-Hop Wired: Last question man, I know you were on Snoop’s album and are in his new movie Malice N Wonderland. What’s that like working with Snoop? Did you learn anything from Snoop that you didn’t already know about the game?

Soulja Boy: Snoop is an O.G., so of course he had words of wisdom for me. When he embraced me in the studio while working together, he just broke down the game to me. I know that Snoop Dogg is a legend in the game, he spit with Tupac and the best of them. For me to be in the booth with him and talking to him on the phone when I need to, it’s just amazing. He embraced me.

»Soulja Boy – Talks With Tim Westwood
»Posted on December 23rd, 2009 • By: • Filed In interviewmedianews

Here’s a video from over when Soulja Boy was over in U.K he did an interview with UK radio personality Time Westwood; and below you can read about rapper BowWow blasting o’le dude about asking SB if his Lamborghini was rented!!!

New Cash Money Records artist Bow Wow recently blasted UK radio personality Tim Westwood for asking Soulja Boy if his Lamborghini was rented or not. Taking to his twitter account, Bow Wow wrote “I agree with @50cent, This n*gga tim westood always try n sturr up sh*t. then when he interview me its gone be a diff story. cm ym FACT: TIM Never question a maf*ka who got money. i been making money since i was in huggies bro. i should be asking you if u rent sh*t.”

Talking with Soulja Boy, Tim Westwood read a bunch of questions off a sheet for the rapper. “Will he ever work with Bow Wow again,” Westwood read. “Was his Lamborghinis rented? They looked like leases to me. I’m not saying there’s a problem [between you two] but they do look like leases. As opposed to your Lambo which you paid for. Paid cash? Paid cash! Now do you change the color of your Lambo?”

»Soulja Boy, Kinda Like a Big Deal
»Posted on October 30th, 2009 • By: • Filed In interviewnews

Say what you want about Soulja Boy Tell ’Em but the kid puts in work. Ever since the teen phenom Supermanned the game with heavy online self-promotion and his ultra-catchy single “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” complete with its own dance, he’s been a constant presence in the game. While some peg him as nothing more than a ringtone rapper, Soulja is a respectable producer and businessman as well. In fact, Kanye West and R&B starlet Rihanna personally called him in to add his Midas touch to their next albums. With three mixtapes—Cortez, DatPiff and Paranormal Activity—dropping tomorrow (October 31), XXLMag.com caught up with the Atlanta rapper to chop it up about jockin’ Gucci Mane, why it’s not easy working with Kanye, and writing R&B records for Rihanna.

XXLMag.com: Gucci Mane just dropped three mixtapes in one day and now you’re doing the same tomorrow for Halloween. What’s the idea behind that?

Soulja Boy: The whole idea is just flooding the game. Flooding that deck period. Just tryna keep the streets updated. I got so many styles, so many beats and lyrics. I just gotta let the people know how it’s going down. I see my dawg Gucci going real hard so we just dropping back-to-back, just trying to stay consistent.

XXLMag.com: Isn’t it a waste to throw out that much music in one day?

Soulja Boy: This is what I do. I make music. I make money. I travel the world. I make business decisions and take things to the next level. But why three mixtapes? Because I don’t wanna just put one mixtape out. I done did that before with like one every week or something like that but I don’t want people to just judge one mixtape like, “Oh, I give that four stars. I just want to put so much out that you just gonna have to fuck with one of those tapes. If you don’t like Cortez or DatPiff, you gonna have to fuck with Paranormal Activity because I’m coming so hard on there. If you don’t like party music or you listening for lyrics or whatever you listening for I gotta hit that shit on one of them tapes.

XXLMag.com: So you’re trying to show folks you’re more than a ringtone rapper?

Soulja Boy: I mean, I think [people] look at me like the nigga that’s getting money right now and if you ain’t getting money then you ain’t doing nothing ’cause money make the world go round. I ain’t saying that it’s all about money… but it is.

XXLMag.com: Yesterday we reported that DJ Whoo Kid leaked your Cortez tape early but it was still all love. That had to mess up your three tapes in one day plans, though

Soulja Boy: I was gonna go in and just do a whole ’nother mixtape and do four of them, but I said I’m just gonna hit ’em with what I said I was… I got MySpace and Ustream doing the promotion for the three mixtapes they releasing all three of them on datpiff.com [tomorrow]. I’m still gonna be in the studio working on these other projects. Right now I need to be finishing up this Rihanna song for her album. Her album dropping on [November] 23rd so I got like less than a couple hours to get this joint turned in.

XXLMag.com: You’re producing the track or just dropping a verse?

Soulja Boy: Nah, I’m writing—the track already done, but I ain’t do the track.

XXLMag.com: Okay, so all you gotta do is spit your verse and it’s a wrap?

Soulja Boy: No, I’m writing the actual song.

XXLMag.com: Say word? How long you been writing R&B records

Soulja Boy: I wrote “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” and Sammie sung that. I been writing, I been producing but I don’t really be up on it and go to an artist like, “You want me to write something for you?” I just always let them reach out to me like, “Soulja, I need a beat from you or I need you to do a hook for me.” I let the artist reach out to me instead of pressuring them.

XXLMag.com: Is that how you hooked up with Kanye West?

Soulja Boy: Yeah, Kanye reached out to me. He been fuckin’ with me like when I had that little situation with Ice-T; he reached out and was like, “What the fuck! Leave Soulja Boy alone.” Ever since then… I ain’t never really get a chance to thank him for that. We preformed together at the MTV Awards in like ’07, ’08 but it was like brief. We ain’t get to sit down and chop it up or whatever so he just reached out to me. We got in the studio, chopped it up and it was like history. Kanye, that nigga great. He one of the greatest to do it.

XXLMag.com: What exactly did y’all knock out together?

Soulja Boy: I produced some tracks [for him]. We got in the studio like two weeks ago and just really just I think Kanye… I work with a lot of artists but out of all of the artists I worked with I think that’s the only artist that try to push my talent to the next level, like it wasn’t easy working with him.

XXLMag.com: How so?

Soulja Boy: Like all the other artists they might want a beat or want me to write a song or hook for them, or just do a verse for them, Kanye came in like, “This the sample, I want you to use this sample and I want you to blah blah blah.” You just gotta keep redoing it until it’s perfect but I know that 100 percent, whoever spit on them, even if Kanye decide to give ’em to somebody else, whoever spit on them they guaranteed smash chart toppers.

XXLMag.com: Think he’ll return the favor for your album?

Soulja Boy: Of course the work relationship is gonna be mutual. My work ethic is crazy and of course his work ethic is crazy. Kanye ain’t even in the country right now and he still trying to work. Like I got some shit coming with him, me and Drake that’s gonna be stuuupid. Some shit with me and Drake leaked earlier this week but we just planning on taking the music shit to the next level.

XXLMag.com: What’s next for Soulja Boy?

Soulja Boy: My artist Jbar; we about to do his record deal Monday. We got this meeting with Sylvia Rhone at Universal and Steve Rifkin at SRC… These labels bidding over Jbar and we about to do this SOD label shit, too… I thought Arab was gonna be the first artist to pop off SOD but Jbar doing it with his single “Daze,” with me featured on it. That ’bout to go No. 1 on radio, his second single about to be bananas, the SOD Money Gang label is gonna be crazy. I’m looking for new talent to sign so whoever reading this on XXLMag.com y’all niggas see me in the streets or in concert or whatever hit me on the Twitter if you got talent and you think you’re gonna be the next to blow ’cause I’m signing muthafuckas. No bullshit. We just grindin’ and trying to expand. SOD until I’m dead.
